The settlement of Aylesbury dates back at least as far as the fourth century as recent excavation of a hill fort has established. The town name is thought to derive from Aeglesburgh which in old English means ‘the fort of Aegel’, though there is no record extant as to just who exactly Aegel was. Aylesbury is a large parish with nearly sixty thousand people living here. The market town was a key centre for parliamentarians during the civil war and in sixteen forty two a significant battle was fought here. The battle was won by the roundheads and a local landowner and member of parliament John Hampden became a hero – his statue can be found in the market square.
There is plenty to do in Aylesbury. Recently a brand new theatre opened in two thousand and ten at a cost of forty five million pounds. The theatre showcases touring shows from London’s West End as well as opera and ballet and of course an annual pantomime. Aside from theatre there are many cool pubs and clubs, restaurants and bistros. We recommend the Bugle Horn on Oxford Road and The Woolpack in Stoke Mandeville, both of which offer a range of traditional beers and decent German lager. The latter is also recommended for fine dining in stylish surroundings. The Rockwood is also a great bar and features live music on a regular basis.
